Overview

'Rainbow Torch' is a color-form label applied collectively to multicolored torches with three or more hues on the tentacles; it does not denote a single propagated lineage. Color combinations vary widely, from pieces that shift color from base to middle to tip to ones with several colors in patches. Both expensive named lineages such as Holy Grail and unnamed multicolored specimens can be called 'rainbow', so the price spread under this label is very wide. Care follows Euphyllia in general: moderate light, gentle flow, and spacing for its sweeper tentacles. Brown jelly disease precautions are the same as for other torches. We treat it here as a color-form lineage.

How to identify

Unlike the two-color NY Knicks and Joker, Rainbow is defined by three or more hues. Named lineages such as Holy Grail are normally sold under their own names even when multicolored, so 'rainbow' is most often applied to multicolored pieces without a specific name.

Grade tiers

Grade names used in the trade for this genus. Criteria vary by seller.

Standard
Common specimens with green or brown tentacles tipped in white to yellow.
Select
Specimens with gold, pink or purple coloration on the tentacles or tips; named trade lines usually fall here.

Torch coral pricing is driven by trade name (such as Dragon Soul) and head count rather than grade.

Typical price range

As a rough guide, from the ten-thousand-yen range to several tens of thousands of yen per head. Prices vary enormously with the number and intensity of colors and with the seller.

Varies widely by season, specimen and seller. Treat as a rough guide.
