Overview

'Rainbow Millepora' is a color label given to multicolor pieces of Acropora traded as Acropora millepora, mixing green, pink, blue and yellow. Here 'millepora' is the species epithet and has nothing to do with the stinging hydrozoan genus Millepora (fire coral). It is not a single lineage propagated from one mother colony; wild imports and aquacultured frags circulate under the same name, so color combinations differ from piece to piece. Keep it under strong light and strong flow with stable KH, Ca and Mg; millepora types are among the hardier and faster-growing Acropora. As a color-morph label, we treat it here as a lineage.

How to identify

PC Rainbow has the thin branches of an echinata type, whereas Rainbow Millepora has the millepora skeleton of short branches densely lined with lip-like polyps. Homewrecker is a tenuis type with radial polyps; tell them apart by skeleton. Pieces sharing the name have different provenance, so read it as a color description rather than a lineage name.

Grade tiers

Grade names used in the trade for this genus. Criteria vary by seller.

Standard
Unbranded aquacultured or wild specimens with common green, brown or purple coloration.
Select
Branded aquacultured lines with established coloration, distinguished by polyp color and tip coloration.

Acropora is rated by brand (such as WWC, TSA and JF), aquaculture generation and how well the frag has established.

Typical price range

Roughly 3,000 to 15,000 yen for a 1-2 cm frag as a guide; it varies widely with wild versus aquacultured origin and coloration.

Varies widely by season, specimen and seller. Treat as a rough guide.
