On the other hand, bare bottom cannot rely on the microbial layer in substrate for nitrification and denitrification, so greater emphasis is placed on nutrient management through the filter system (protein skimmer, refugium, etc.). Additionally, the layout tends to make live rock appear to be floating in mid-water, so aquascape design requires careful planning from an aesthetic standpoint.

The Difference Between Powder Sand and Live Sand

When laying substrate, the options are roughly divided into fine-grained "powder sand" and "live sand" in which bacteria and microorganisms are already established. Powder sand has fine particles, giving it a smooth appearance, and has the advantage of allowing organisms that burrow into substrate—such as certain goby species, sea cucumbers, and hermit crabs—to move more easily. However, because the particles are fine, they tend to be stirred up in areas of strong water flow, and if sand contacts coral polyps, it can be irritating, so careful attention to water flow direction is necessary.

Live sand typically has slightly coarser particles, and the substrate interior is said to more readily form the microbial communities responsible for nitrification and denitrification. This can sometimes help shorten the cycling period during initial tank setup, but since the microbial community changes with the tank environment, simply adding live sand does not eliminate the need for proper water quality management. It serves as a foundation at best.

Substrate Depth and the Concept of Anaerobic Layers

When laying substrate, depth is also an important design consideration. Laying it thin (a few millimeters to about 1 cm) makes cleaning easier and detritus accumulation easier to monitor visually, but an anaerobic layer capable of supporting denitrification is said to be difficult to establish. Conversely, laying it deep (several centimeters or more) causes the lower levels to become an oxygen-poor anaerobic environment, which may support denitrification—the process of reducing nitrate to nitrogen gas—but poor management can lead to the accumulation of harmful gases such as hydrogen sulfide. Intermediate depths are said to achieve neither advantage well, so it is preferable to clarify your goal first (whether to prioritize easy cleaning or to aim for nutrient export via denitrification) before deciding on depth.

Compatibility with Bottom-Dwelling Organisms

The presence or absence of substrate and particle size directly affect which organisms can be kept. For example, LPS corals like Trachyphyllia do not attach to rock but settle by their own weight onto sand or in rock crevices, and fine substrate or sand pockets between live rocks make it easier for them to settle in a natural posture. Additionally, cleanup crew members (certain snails and sea cucumbers) that burrow into the sand to consume food scraps and organic matter are more likely to exhibit their natural behavior when substrate is present. Conversely, in bare-bottom tanks, organism choices are more limited—something to keep in mind.

Maintenance in Practice

When using substrate, regular siphoning (removing detritus from the substrate surface) becomes the foundation of maintenance. Frequency varies depending on biomass and feeding amount, but many aquarists make a habit of gently stirring the substrate surface while siphoning during water changes. When using deep substrate, avoiding large-scale mixing of the entire substrate is recommended, as this risks disturbing the anaerobic layer and releasing accumulated materials into the water column all at once.

Considerations for Initial Setup and Layout Changes

When initially introducing substrate—whether powder sand or live sand—white cloudiness tends to occur immediately after adding to the tank, and filter load temporarily increases. When adding substrate to an existing tank with livestock, or changing substrate type, it is safer to add small amounts at a time or temporarily reduce water flow to let dust settle. Additionally, when significantly rearranging the layout and disturbing the substrate, accumulated detritus and anaerobic gases within the substrate can be released into the water column all at once, causing rapid water quality changes. It is preferable to schedule work to coincide with water changes and perform it when the tank can readily absorb such changes.

Substrate is the "invisible foundation" of a coral tank. Since each style has its trade-offs, selecting based on the organisms you wish to keep and the water quality management approach you aim for will lead to long-term stability with fewer problems.
