Overview

Symphyllia is a genus of large-polyp stony corals (family Lobophylliidae) forming massive brain-like colonies on Indo-Pacific reefs. Their deeply convoluted ridges and valleys can span 20–50 cm or more in diameter, displaying vivid fluorescence in green, red, orange, and purple. Moderate lighting (100–200 PAR) and gentle indirect flow are ideal; strong direct current damages the fleshy tissue. Stable water parameters (24–27°C, KH 8–10) are essential. Extended sweeper tentacles emerge nightly and aggressively sting neighboring corals, so a minimum 15 cm clearance from other specimens is advised. Weekly target feeding with brine shrimp or small pellets accelerates growth and enhances color. Fragging is straightforward using a band saw or chisel. Symphyllia's dramatic size and striking coloration make it a showpiece in large reef aquaria.
