Overview

War coral (genera Favites, Goniastrea, and related genera, family Merulinidae) are massive stony corals whose densely packed, contiguous polyps were previously classified under the catch-all genus Favia before modern reclassification. Distributed across Indo-Pacific and Atlantic reefs, their colonies display diverse greens, yellows, browns, and vivid fluorescent colors in collectors' favorites. They are moderately easy to keep under medium lighting (150–250 PAR) with gentle to moderate flow. Their aggressive mesenterial filaments and sweeper tentacles require adequate spacing from neighboring corals. Stable alkalinity and periodic target feeding enhance coloration and promote steady long-term growth.
