Overview

Favites (family Merulinidae), a brain coral relative, is a massive LPS/medium-polyp coral widely distributed across Indo-Pacific and Atlantic reefs. Its polygonal corallites share common walls in a cerioid arrangement, forming a tortoise-shell-like pattern. It displays greens, browns, yellows, fluorescent green, and purples, with vivid specimens favored by collectors. It is relatively easy to keep under moderate lighting and gentle to moderate flow. It extends sweeper tentacles at night to attack nearby corals, so allow adequate spacing. Feeding once or twice weekly promotes color and growth. Hardy, tolerant, and easy to frag, it is a popular massive LPS for beginners. It is distinguished from the related Favia by the structure of its corallite walls.
