Overview

Favia (family Merulinidae), a type of brain coral, is a massive LPS/medium-polyp coral widely distributed across Indo-Pacific and Atlantic reefs. Rounded star-shaped corallites are densely packed into dome-shaped colonies, and the polyps inflate noticeably at night. Colors include greens, reds, browns, and fluorescent green, with vivid specimens favored by collectors. It is relatively easy to keep under moderate lighting and gentle to moderate flow. It can extend sweeper tentacles to attack nearby corals, so allow adequate spacing. Feeding once or twice weekly promotes color and growth. Hardy with a wide tolerance and easy to frag, it is a popular massive LPS for beginners. Note that recent taxonomic revision has reclassified many former Favia species into other genera.
