Quarantine (QT) Systems: The First Line of Prevention

In reef tanks, introducing new corals or organisms directly into the main tank is risky. Various risk factors exist: introduction of pathogens (bacteria, protozoans, parasites, etc.), release of allelopathic substances, and unexpected predatory organisms mixed in.

A quarantine (QT) system is preventative infrastructure for isolating, observing, and treating these risks. Many experienced reef keepers always observe new organisms in an isolation tank (QT tank) for a set period before introducing them to the main tank. This practice becomes the key to overall tank stability and long-term husbandry success.

QT Tank Sizing and Setup

Capacity and Location

The isolation tank for QT use varies depending on the size of the organism to be introduced. For corals, approximately 20L is suitable for small frags (5cm or less), 40–60L for medium colonies (10–20cm), and 90L or more for large specimens (30cm or larger).

The more delicate the organism sensitive to rapid changes in seawater, the larger the QT tank capacity required. QT tanks that are too small (10L or less) carry a high risk of stress-induced mortality shortly after introduction, due to trace element depletion and unstable nitrogen cycling.

The ideal location is visible from the main tank, but it is essential to provide an independent environment isolated from direct light and water flow from the main tank. Placing a QT tank in a sunlit living area causes severe temperature fluctuations and fails the pre-introduction "acclimation" process. Choose a dimly lit, temperature-stable location (room temperature 20–25°C range).

Filtration System and Water Quality

QT tank filtration need not be as complex as the main tank. A sponge filter (airlift type), small heater, and air pump are sufficient. A combination of undergravel filter and air pump also works well. The critical factor is that biological filtration is established.

Before introduction, it is recommended to seed the QT tank in advance with seed water from the main tank and perform bacterial culturing. Alternatively, transferring a sponge filter piece from the main tank and conditioning the microbial community will mitigate water quality fluctuations after introduction.

For lighting, strong lighting for corals is unnecessary. Rather, dimmer lighting (low-output T5 fluorescent settings, etc.) helps reduce stress immediately after introduction. Providing approximately 12 hours of lighting during daytime maintains the coral's day/night rhythm while avoiding excessive light stress.

Introduction Procedures and Observation Period

Step 1: Pre-Introduction Inspection

Upon receiving the coral, first check the water inside the plastic bag. Confirm there is no foul odor, no dust-like substances floating, and no visible damage or bleaching on the coral itself. If significant damage or foul odor is detected, there is a possibility of DOA (dead on arrival). Contact the seller and consult on how to proceed.

Step 2: Water Acclimation

Float the plastic bag on the QT tank surface and allow 30 minutes for temperature equalization. Then gradually mix QT tank water into the bag. Replace approximately 25% of the water inside the bag with QT tank water every 15 minutes, performing complete water adjustment over 60–90 minutes using the drip method—the safest approach.

Step 3: QT Period (Observation Phase)

A typical QT period is 2–3 weeks for corals and 4–6 weeks for marine fish as a guideline. During this period, daily observation of the coral's condition and record-keeping are crucial. Check the following items:

  • Polyp opening status (early morning and nighttime daily)
  • Color changes (signs of fading)
  • Tissue necrosis or unusual swelling
  • Parasites visible to the naked eye (small sea slugs, flatworms, etc.)
  • Water cloudiness, odor, and signs of bacterial overgrowth

Step 4: Pathogen Detection Protocol

To detect pathogens invisible to the naked eye (particularly protozoans), the following procedure is effective.

Mild stress test: On days 3–5 after introduction, raise the QT tank water temperature by 1°C. If pathogens are present, temperature stress may activate parasites, causing the coral to react (e.g., increased mucus secretion). By observing abnormal mucus or behavioral changes during this period, you can infer the potential presence of pathogens.

Feeding response observation: Perform light daily feeding (a small amount of shrimp paste) and check whether polyps show normal feeding responses. Under pathogenic infection, feeding responses often become dull or disappear.

Copper Treatment and Its Avoidance

Traditionally, copper ions (cupro) were used for parasite treatment in QT tanks. However, in modern reef keeping, copper-based treatments are minimized. The reasons are:

  1. Copper adsorbs to rock and biological filtration bacteria, making removal difficult
  2. Once copper persists, transfer to the main tank causes catastrophic damage
  3. Copper-resistant parasites have emerged, limiting treatment effectiveness

Instead, the following non-copper approaches are recommended:

Extended quarantine period: Extending from 3 weeks to 4–6 weeks allows most parasites to be naturally eliminated.

Salinity adjustment: Freshwater dips (temporary immersion in pure water) are reliable parasite removal methods but difficult to apply to large corals. Instead, maintaining QT tank salinity at 1.020–1.022 and keeping a slightly lower-salinity environment suppresses parasite proliferation.

Water flow and feeding adjustments: By providing gentle water flow and regular feeding, corals gain more opportunities to naturally remove parasites.

Criteria for Introduction to the Main Tank

After the QT period, introduction to the main tank is judged appropriate when the following conditions are met:

  • Polyps open normally daily and feeding response is stable
  • Color shows no fading or bleaching
  • No foul odor, opaque mucus, or signs of necrosis
  • No visible parasites under naked-eye observation
  • Water parameters (pH, KH, salinity) are stable

If these conditions are not met, extend the QT period further and postpone introduction until the problems are resolved. The risk of the entire main tank becoming infected and collapsing due to hasty introduction far exceeds the risk of losing a single new coral.

Initial Management After Introduction

Immediately after introducing to the main tank, a 3–7 day re-acclimation period is necessary because lighting and flow differ. Right after introduction, place the coral in a location receiving modest light and flow as much as possible, then gradually move it to its final position. This minimizes fading or bleaching caused by introduction stress.

In Conclusion: QT is an "Investment"

Constructing and operating a QT system requires time, equipment, and effort. However, this is an essential "investment" to protect the main tank. Once an unquarantined organism introduces pathogens to the main tank, addressing the situation requires several times more effort and economic loss. If you aim for long-term stability in reef keeping, QT operation is an unavoidable practical necessity.
