Overview
'Jawbreaker' is a lineage of Discosoma, the flat mushroom with no bubbles, defined by red, orange and yellow patches spreading irregularly across the disc. We list it under the bounce mushroom page, but it has none of the rounded bumps of a bounce and belongs to a different genus. Slow growth and splitting, together with wide variation in how much of the disc is patched, made it one of the best-known high-priced mushrooms. Keep it under low-to-moderate light and gentle flow; strong light washes out the color. It propagates by splitting and is traded per polyp. We register it here as a lineage and do not assert origin.
How to identify
Bounce types (OG, Sunkist, Bali) are Rhodactis with rounded bubbles, whereas Jawbreaker is a Discosoma with a flat disc. Even with similar colors, bumps mean bounce and a flat patched disc means Jawbreaker. Specimens with a larger patched area rate higher.
Grade tiers
Grade names used in the trade for this genus. Criteria vary by seller.
- Standard
- Small bubbles and a single color; young specimens that have not yet formed bubbles also fall here.
- Select
- Clearly formed bubbles with two colors split between the base and the bubbles.
- Ultra
- Large bubbles in multiple colors; the more uniform the bubble count and size, the higher the rating.
Bounce mushrooms are rated by bubble size and color count. For named lines such as OG and Sunkist, see the lineage pages.
Typical price range
Roughly 10,000-50,000 yen per polyp as a guide, with heavily patched specimens going higher. Prices vary widely with patch coverage, size and seller.
